Memorial Service for William “Chip” Doering
From the Doering Family:
William “Chip” Allen Doering of Reston, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 21, 2024 at his home as the result of a cardiac event.
Chip was born in Whidbey Island, WA. After growing up in many places as part of a Navy family, the Doerings landed in the greater Washington, DC area. Boy Scouts was an important part of Chip’s childhood. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland and son of predeceased parents Eugene “Gene” and June and younger brother to Rick.
Chip and Rick were a team of pranksters and loved a good laugh. He was often the instigator, stoking those around him and joining in the laughter. He rarely missed an opportunity to spend time with his family and friends, traveling as far as Germany or wherever the family adventures would take him. Most recently Chip was with us for Kyle and Izzy’s wedding in September. We all deeply felt that we were a priority to Chip and he to us. Chip relished his newest name, Uncle Woodchip, christened by his great nephew Gavin. He will be sorely missed by all of us who loved him. Chip’s interests included sailing, birding, rooting for Navy (beat Army) and playing games always exclaiming while losing “I hate this game”, of course with a grin on his face. A gentleman to the end, we all miss Chip sorely.
Chip was a regular participant in Tres Dias spiritual enrichment weekends and well-loved member of the Tres Dias community. He attended Northern Virginia Tres Dias (NVTD) Men’s Weekend # 5 in October 2003 and served faithfully thereafter on 31 Tres Dias weekends – 26 Northern Virginia Tres Dias weekends, 3 Tres Dias of Central Virginia weekends and 2 Southern Ontario Tres Dias weekends. He served as the leader (Rector) on NVTD# 35 in November 2018. He was planning to lead a Prayer Team on the NVTD# 43 Men’s Weekend.
A memorial service will be held for Chip at 1:30pm on November 13 in the RBC Youth Building.
I’ve been in the hospital since mid-September after an accident while on vacation in Vancouver Canada. I kept Chip up to date on my recovery. I last spoke to Chip in mid-October and he was in great spirits. I fly back to MD on 15 November. Chip had been one of my closest friends since we met in a zoology class in 1980 when I was 18. Over the years we’ve had many adventures together including many fire pit discussions this past Fall. I last saw Chip in July when we had dinner together at his house. As usual we shared stories, laughs and friendship. Chip always ended our reunions with a big hug and “I love you brother”. We were brothers and I loved him too. I will truly miss my friend Chip who brought so much joy to everyone around him including me and my family.
